Floor plan of Neiswander/Corsello Mountain Home by Michael Neiswander

Nestled in the woods two hours east of Minneapolis, Off-Grid Inn, Unit 2, one of a pair of rental cabins designed by Danny Lindstrom and built with his friend and business partner, Duff Davidson, combines simplicity with unexpected, offbeat elements like a neon-yellow handrail, an oversize stairway, and changeable lighting.

The outdoor space includes a fire pit.

Before: This 3,254-square-foot home was built in 1965 in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles, and had since been added onto at the garages.

“The tent-like shape resembles a mountain. When the snow falls, the triangle becomes embedded in the landscape,” Tham says.

One of the home's five bedrooms features a dramatic wall of windows at one end of the home.

A fireplace in the living room features glazed clay bricks from Swedish manufacturer Tegelbolaget. The dining table and chairs are by Kristensen & Kristensen.

The interior walls, ceilings, and built-ins are clad in Siberian larch from UPK Concept. Tham placed the glazed openings and doorways to maintain clear sight lines throughout the long and narrow home.

The exterior walls are from Kebony, the roof from Prefa, and the windows from Velfac

The Hideout lives on the same five-acre property as another guesthouse Castillero owns, The Woodlands.

“Certain people don’t feel comfortable camping alone. But in a space like this it feels much safer, and having the amenities — a hot shower, a wood stove, the ability to do some simple cooking — is just perfect," says Castillero.

“I wanted the main focal point to be the outside,” says Castillero. “By minimizing what’s inside, even the slope of the roof makes you turn and look outside.”

Floyd Home provided furniture for the compact space, including the bed, the table legs and the cozy rug.

Castillero and Reed took inspiration from Norwegian design, keeping things cozy but minimalist with OSB cladding and a monochromatic palette.

A wall of breeze-block open to the elements and sun from a skylight create a sort of outdoor shower inside the bathroom off the main bedroom.
