Paul’s favourite spot to stand is in the kitchen looking west through the dining room windows, “I turn my head to the right and see the ‘Mr. Miagi’ tree.” The other direction, he can see through the glass to the living room where Anna Siem’s large painting hangs.

Although synthetic slate roof tiles have been around since the 1970s, the way architect Stephen Bruns used them to completely clad Woven House is unusual. "I love this material," says Bruns. "The way light reflects off the tiles creates a specular effect, almost like a mosaic." That reflective quality is enhanced by the floor-to-ceiling windows by Loewen.

The cabin was the first structure he built and exhibits some of the features seen elsewhere, like the tin roof, clerestory windows, and use of pressure-treated lumber.

The other structures in Snow, both of which Bob overhauled, are a small cabin with a kitchenette, sitting area, and sleeping loft and the “clubhouse,” an old farmhouse with a 1980s extension.

The deck is made of pressure-treated pine that’s meant to age naturally and discolor unevenly, depending on how the sun hits it.

The amount of time Melody and Bob spend at Adelaide “ebbs and flows,” says Bob, depending on commitments in Nashville, where he works on projects and Melody owns a salon and bathhouse. “When we’re here, we make amazing food, swim, goof off, and go for walks,” says Melody. “We walk the whole loop of the property.”

The guest bathroom includes a concrete wall and pale yellow tiles from Daltile.

The primary bedroom cabin sits in a natural clearing amongst the trees, allowing for a water view and copious sunlight. The boulder-studded coast offers gently sloping paths to the ocean for a quick dip.
