A wood-burning stove adds a cozy element.

In the living room, a Nelson bench doubles as a coffee table, and a wood-burning stove from Cleanburn Stoves set in a white brick hearth keeps the space warm.

Shiplap pine walls, primed white, complement unfinished concrete floors and a wood stove by Jotul.

The playful geometric forms were inspired by nature. The open-ended, half-moon island at the heart of the home, for example, draws on the lines created by rays of light and the movement of light on water. This allows clients Matt and Sarah to prepare and serve up to 10 guests diner style. “It transforms cooking and eating into collectly shared experience where everyone can see and interact with each other,” explains Matt.

The richly tactile material palette is one of the homeowners’ favorite elements. “Our home is filled with beautiful tile, soft textured fabrics, chrome fixtures, and the main volumes are wrapped—floor, wall and ceiling—in waxed white oak,” says client, Matt.

The pine-and-steel outdoor dining table is from Hatch Workshop, while the benches were built by Clifton Craftwork and Design.

The cast-in-place concrete site wall that pierces the volume frames the entry and serves as the kitchen backsplash. The kitchen appliances are by Fisher & Paykel.

The double-height living space is anchored by a wood-burning stove by Lopi in the corner. The large east-facing window on the far wall floods the room with magical morning light. All the windows and doors are by Quantum.

The entrance is located to the side of the house. The recessed Douglas fir front door was built by Austin’s Honea Woodworks. The roof is Galvalume standing-seam metal.
