A closer look at the expanded living area in the upper-level maisonette.

A ladder in one of the maisonette bedrooms leads to a sleeping loft. “Eventually the new larch will mellow, and the distinction between old and new will be harder to see,” says Tuckey.

The guest loft features a bed from West Elm and custom plywood casework by Kansas City artisan Haynes Nichols.

Architect Jai Kumaran and his partner, Lindsay Merkle, transformed a badly neglected ridgetop property in Scappoose, Oregon, into a retreat, completing a 3,000-square-foot prefabricated workshop and studio suite as the first phase of a larger planned creative compound where they could live, work, and gather with family and friends.

The stools at the antique island are Wesley Walters + Salla Luhtasela for Nikari Wood. The wall sconces are Early Electrics.

Custom oak cabinetry in the kitchenette was given a modern treatment to balance the more rustic elements in the setting, like the ceiling and antique table-turned-kitchen island. The faucet is by Kingston Brass.

Enclosed by a glass verrière partition, the kitchen includes custom-built cabinetry in untreated wood, SMEG appliances, and a free-standing pastel-green fridge.

In the living/dining area, rough-sawn wood-plank screens cover a wall of windows. The removable panels keep the space cool in summer but are taken down the rest of the year so that the sun can heat the interior. The dining table is from Restoration Hardware and the wood chairs from Barnaby.

"The hut is a series of simple design moves," says the firm. "The form is reminiscent of a surf lifesaving or observation tower."

Keeping sustainability in mind, the architects have cladded the structure's interior with timber.

The tree house's salvaged French-style windows were purchased on Facebook Marketplace for $200.

Romero dressed the daybed cushions with linen and merino wool.

The living room is anchored by a sofa and lounge chair, both by Børge Mogensen, as well as a Conoid bench by George Nakashima. An Isamu Noguchi pendant lamp casts a warm glow onto the Brasilia coffee table, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune for Swedese.

The new layout feels more open and spacious, thanks in part to strategic open shelving and chicken wire on the cabinet fronts. All of the bowls and boards are by Elsie Green, and the ceramics are from Jenni Kayne.

The corner kitchen comes with marble countertops and a large ceramic sink.

Unsure of how to light under the loft, Monica turned to a friend from the gym who works in lighting design. He helped her with the design, the installation, and even gifted her materials.
