“The original house was more about viewing nature from afar,” says architect Alice Fung of the 1954 structure, which is perched at the highest point on the site. “The new buildings are very connected to the land and allow people to go outdoors at every level.”

The light-coloured Rome travertine door handle was incorporated to harmonise with the texture and colour of the earthen wall finish.

The owners' love of Sea Ranch style inspired the architecture of their home, which surrounds a courtyard protecting three large redwoods.

A series of “stacked boxes” laid the foundation for this Sea Ranch–inspired home on a narrow site set on two flood zones and filled with protected redwoods.

The addition is clad in vertical black panels, a refracted reference to the horizontal white panels on the restored original building.
