The spaces are connected by stairs made of railroad ties. The railings are wood painted silver, a treatment often used by Neutra for window mullions. “He did it so they would be less visible,” says Patrick.

LaFayette Studio, which helped with the interiors, selected a Holly Hunt fabric for built-in sofas, which are complemented by a rug from Rush House, a sconce by Brendan Ravenhill Studio, and a Swift ceiling light from Cedar & Moss.

Across from the library, a former laundry room was turned into a bar with walnut millwork by Lutz Wood. The vintage lights are by A.V. Mazzega, and the custom-upholstered Tulip stools are from Knoll.

The light-filled chef's kitchen is fitted with copper and marble countertops and Miele appliances. Tall windows frame striking views of the nearby pond and rolling landscape.

A stainless steel, wall-mounted sink appears to float, as does the steel shelf below, and the pipes are hidden in the wall.

The materials for the prefab were chosen to help the lodge blend into the wood. According to the architects, “the lodge features an intentionally limited palette of natural materials, including the same species of timber, western red cedar, on the external cladding and internal lining. Left unfinished, the exterior will weather naturally to a silver-gray color that is reminiscent of the local landscape, which will contrast the cozy, warmer tones of the interior."

“Those living rooms are always a challenge in brownstones, to furnish in a thoughtful way,” says Cuttle, pointing to the narrow dimensions of the room, the low window sills, and abundance of woodwork taking up wall space. A curving Carl Hansen sofa floats in front of the bay window, so as not to block the light and allowing easy sightlines. The chairs and coffee table are from Lawson Fenning and the rug is Jardan.

After: The architects updated the millwork in the living room for a more subtle look, which serves as a cohesive background for the original Art Deco fireplace and a collection of midcentury-style furniture.

In the kitchen, appliances are strategically housed within bespoke joinery. Glass doors and picture windows intimately connect the space to the nearby gardens and hillside.

An orange wood stove serves as a colorful partition between the living and dining areas.

The tub backdrop is composed of bamboo-cut textured marble tile. “When the lights are on, it casts a really beautiful waterfall effect of light across the texture,” says Watts.
