Local craftsmen made-to- measure bench and banquette in oak, with matching shelves and built-in drawers to maximize storage.

The focus of the renovation was the kitchen, where the textures of tiles and brickwork play backdrop to considered, bespoke carpentry.

"I optimized every inch of space in the bathroom," says Petillaut, who employed a black-and-white palette and geometric lines that make the room feel more voluminous.

In the kitchen, an oak counter warms white lacquered cabinetry and a marble backsplash. "The kitchen was one of the trickiest parts of the flat to design," Petillault says. "[It was located] in the center of the floor plan, one room away from the windows, [so] we decided to blend it into the living room."

Tasked by John Powers and Jennifer Bostic with renovating a run-down cottage that was never meant to be lived in year round, Otto Ruano of Lead Studios transformed the space while keeping as much of it intact as possible. Potence lamps by Jean Prouvé illuminate the kitchen and living area. The bifold doors are by Loewen.

The living area opens onto a deck. A set of benches on ground level were built by the couple for their wedding but have been repurposed here as flexible seating.

The kitchen includes under-counter cabinets from Ikea and a custom open shelving system and hood in white oak designed and built by Jai and Lindsay.
