SCAD Museum of Art (Sottile & Sottile: 2014)
Inspired by the masonry ruins of an antebellum freight warehouse, the architectural and design team synthesized the 19th-century structure with their vision for a contemporary museum, creating a sleek hybrid in downtown Savannah. It’s “an academic building that combines a museum of contemporary art with university studios and classrooms, an incredible asset to students of art and design,” according to architect Christian Sottile.
The roof terrace, with great views to downtown and the waterfront, is a great oasis to get outside during these quarantining time. Previously a bare deck covered in exposed waterproof roofing membrane, an artificial turf floor covering and linear planters add lushness and provide visual boundaries to create a more intimate space.
Central to the whole open common space of the unit, this double-height wall provides a great opportunity to display the diverse assembly of arts and collectibles. This eccentricity resonates in all the design elements throughout the unit, the graphic wall covering, the mix-match dining chairs, every piece has a story to tell.
