In the living room, Boomerang chairs by Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen face a coffee table by Nicos Zographos. Custom pieces in the style of modular furniture pioneer Harvey Probber include sofas by Ablyss and a corner table by Crockett Woodworks. The Stiffel table lamp was purchased new by Scott’s parents in the early ’60s. The vintage artworks are from the David Cook Galleries in Denver.
The bus in action. For cooling, the couple purchased a $720 Coleman air conditioner, and there’s a $189 Fan-tastic Vent for circulation. They also prepared for outdoor adventures with a $240 awning and $60 bug screens. The bus comes equipped with solar panels ($120), a Victron inverter/charger ($1,280), as well as gray and fresh water tanks ($518).
What Carstensen saved on labor costs he was able to put into furnishings. The interior of the screened-in porch is outfitted with a mix of furnishings, both vintage and new. He purchased the vintage Malm fireplace in Los Angeles on a work trip and had it shipped to Portland. The rug, shelf unit, and loveseat are all from the locally-based Schoolhouse Electric, as are the ceiling lights: Factory Light No. 7 in Green.
Combo Oven and Stove
Christopher found the 1962 Custom Imperial Flair combo oven-stove by Frigidaire/General Motors in perfect working order when he moved in—it just needed new burners. The eye-level dual ovens are fitted with glass doors that open vertically—a bit like the gullwing doors on a DeLorean—while the burners hide in a sliding drawer. With its Howard Miller–inspired clock and cursive labeling, the Flair was the “it” stove of the ’60s, seen in the kitchen of Samantha and Darrin Stephens on Bewitched.
