Designed by aviation engineer Hugh Pape in the 1970s, the house comprises a string of elevated hut-like rooms connected by hallways.

Because the island is accessible only by boat or helicopter, the prefab pods were airlifted from a barge onto foundations that Pape had constructed on-site. “It was so well planned and executed that apparently it took the chopper just thirty minutes to drop the pods in,” says Jason.

Perched at the top of the primary suite is a private meditation space overlooking the ocean.

The kitchen, located steps from the main living area, comes with a circular island, fireplace, tile countertops, and stained-glass lunettes fitted into the beams overhead.

Perched just a few feet from the Malibu coastline, the home is named after its roofline, which was inspired by a sandcastle. The property includes 122 feet of private beachfront.

Hand-built by visionary architect (and surfer) Harry Gesner in 1974, the Sandcastle on the Malibu coast is listed for a steep $22.5M.

The couple found terra cotta breeze block that they stained black and installed so that the pattern was randomized. The builder was a bit scandalized that they wanted to cover the view from the living room, but Tom says, "The view is here all the time and it's nice to go from room to room and discover it, then rediscover it."

To keep the design simple and elemental, Tom and Brenda treated the wall of cabinets, the center island and the hood almost as furniture, not anchored to the ceiling above and floor below. As a result, you are able to see the entirety of the space without interruption.

In this living area, a built-in Murphy bed can be pulled down to create a flexible sleeping area when needed. This Murphy bed incorporates two small bedside nooks with built-in lighting.

“Using only wood to form a cabinet results in artistic moments. Diagonals read as decorative, but these strong triangles are necessary when you’re not using plywood,” Caleb says. “It’s pure joy to use the kitchen, knowing that all parts of it are built with meaning and without compromise.

Martin, Daniela, and their three children are all movie buffs, so a dedicated cinema room was a must. The porthole window is a creative touch that easily slides closed for the optimal theater experience.

The ocean-facing side of the house holds the communal areas of the house: the kitchen, living and dining rooms, and the cinema. Low-profile outdoor furniture dots the deck, while an alcove protects view-seekers if the day gets too windy.

An outdoor shower just outside the primary suite is perfect for rinsing off after long, sandy days at the beach.
