The kitchen, which peers out onto the yard, has subway tile floors and the same wood ceiling motif as the living room.

The main bedroom in the open-concept loft offers welcome cohesion with the custom millwork of the primary bathroom. “It was important that everything work together and not feel like too much wood or too dark,” shares Worrell.

Designed in 1899 by notable architect Robert Maynicke, the architecturally exemplary loft includes 14 double-hung windows which line the perimeter.

Large format, 12-inch white oak floors help highlight and dramatize the scale of the apartment. “At the width we selected, you see such a beautiful grain expression,” says architect Max Worrell.

The flooring installation exaggerates the loft’s unusual geometry, creating visually interesting moments where the white oak planks reach a terminus at the home’s entry.

The compound includes a communal farmhouse, a series of glass and concrete cabins, and a mobile whiskey bar in a refurbished Airstream.

A folding bench chair pulls out to be extra table seating — though the table itself is mobile, too, able to be shifted to a second wall mount to act as a work space when Kyle craves a change of scenery.

The midcentury home is now on the market for the second time since it was built.

Noted Portland architect Richard Campbell designed this two-story residence on a wooded lot in Portland’s Highland Crest neighborhood as his primary home. After it was completed in 1966, the house received a 1979 addition by architect Gary Michael. It was later restored and renovated by Paul McKean Architecture in two phases, from 2011 to 2013 and 2018 through 2019.
