A second bedroom in the main house is furnished with bunk beds, offering plenty of sleeping space for Egelund’s family, including her five grandchildren, when they come to visit.

The view was pivotal in the design, and the living area features 180-degree views that bring the spectacular seascape into the interior. The soft, neutral palette complements the seascape.

The architect and clients collaborated closely with local timber workers to create the finely crafted details of the roof structure and timber-clad passageway that encloses and connects the three distinct spaces. “These details were expensive, but they add a level of quality,” explains Egelund.

Glass doors enclose the dining area so that it can be opened up to the terrace in warmer months, and the seascape is still a part of the interior in the cooler weather when the doors are closed.

The summer home is located on the west coast of Zeeland in Denmark. Egelund’s son had also recently built a summer house nearby, and Egelund and Dahl appreciated the work of the architect, Mads Lund. “We felt we could have a good collaboration with him, rather than being a small client with a big company,” Egelund explains. “We started to talk with him about what we liked about my son’s house, as well as our own ideas for our summer home.”

Martin, Daniela, and their three children are all movie buffs, so a dedicated cinema room was a must. The porthole window is a creative touch that easily slides closed for the optimal theater experience.

The elegantly curved detail of the concrete roof is reminiscent of a ship's sail. In practical terms, it gives maximum sun exposure to the front deck with its pool.

The new kitchen-and-dining area connects to the living area and the rear yard.

Upstairs in the main living barn, an open loft area is tucked into the roof gable with a skylight offering views to the water beyond. Ebonized red oak casework frames the space.

A Noguchi pendant floats above the living area. The hearth of the fireplace extends to become the stair landing, which leads to a loft space above.

The main living barn opens to a covered outdoor space for eating and lounging, and in the summer, doors and windows can open up completely to blur the line between inside and out. The table is from Kettal and dining chairs are from Tolix.

Pickled whitewashed pine walls continue into the kitchen and are contrasted by dark, ebonized red oak cabinetry and soapstone counters. A custom white oak table continues from the island and offers additional seating with Mogensen chairs. Above, a pendant from Santa & Cole is arranged in a custom configuration.
