The ferns encircle the kitchen and even camouflage the refrigerator. "I worked with Tempest Tileworks here in Portland, who made each tile by hand and gave me guidance on how to paint with glaze, which I'd never done before," says Eng-Goetz. The green range is from Lacanche.

Eng-Goetz hand-painted a magical mural of sword ferns around the kitchen to give the room a "forest view." The tiles are from Tempest Tileworks; the wall sconce and sink pendant lighting are from a collaboration between JHID and GKA Lighting. Adding another metallic accent, a brass faucet from Waterworks rises from a rich western walnut countertop. The room is painted with Benjamin Moore’s Storm Cloud Gray.

The bed platform can host guests or tea ceremonies.

While this is a full-sized bathroom, West says that the same principles should apply to a powder room: add dimension and detail wherever possible. She thinks using matte black finishes adds more drama, too.

"This is the perfect space to go bold with wallpaper, tiles, and color," Dabito says of powder rooms—this bold green one is his design. "Make every inch count, and turn every corner into a statement."

If Bradley had to choose a favorite bathroom design in her portfolio, it would be this guest bathroom. "Incorporating a strong, geometric pattern through the use of white, rectangular mosaic tiles with black grout created the illusion of space," she says.

The ceiling of the exterior patio and soffits is crafted from inexpensive sheets of plywood cut into smaller pieces, assembled in a custom pattern, and stained.

“Where most would use chicken wire and a box design, the clients wanted the chicken coop to complement the architecture of the house,” says architect Cavin Costello. “So, the coop uses some elements of the main house, with the rusted, corrugated metal shed roof and vertical brise-soleil. It’s a chicken coop design that can stand up to the elements of living in the desert.”

The kitchen was the only room which received a slightly altered layout. In addition wood boards from demolished cabinets were reused to create new cabinet fronts hung on brass piano hinges. The result is a mix of period-appropriate additions and new configurations with recycled parts.

Black was a natural choice when it came to updating an already existing wet bar. The brass shelf was laser-cut from thick brass sheet--designed with a simple geometry as a nod to a classic bar.
