Huge header beams and thickened walls allow for a generous opening between the living room and deck, with doors that recess into the wall cavity and a seamless meeting between the indoor floor and the exterior decking.

Le Whit created an airy first floor by exposing the framework at the ceiling. “There’s a lot of attention and pull to the structure, almost like the exoskeleton of the home,” says Curtiss. The fluted glass panel replaced a solid wall, adding transparency while still supplying structural support.

Mac describes adding the fireplace’s Domingue plaster finish as a real "labor of love." "The end result was a credit to the builder and his team. It really pulled the spaces together, and there is nothing better than the natural light playing with the plaster finish," explains the architect.

Birdseye designed the home to be "as visually quiet as possible," says Mac.

In the living room, the team raised the firebox, cladded the hearth in a tactile plaster finish, and installed a floating limestone bench that wraps the column. On the left (unseen) is integrated firewood storage, and a cozy reading nook sits on the right. "The bench was designed to be used as a social space/lounge, and is well-used," says Coffey. The wood beams and red brick were scraped and stripped many times to remove the silver paint and reclaim a natural state.

A natural wood ceiling, curving forms, and soft textiles combine to convey a sense of coziness in the sitting room.

The original fireplace was updated by wrapping the brick with a gray concrete plaster that better matched the warm, modern feel of the home.
