The structures share a solar panel, but the families control their own home's heat level with a wood-burning stove.

The open-plan living room is Standard Studio architect and creative director Jurjen van Hulzen’s favorite part of the home. “Mom can cook, Dad can work or play piano, the kids can play. At nighttime there’s a fireplace and a nice sitting area,” says van Hulzen. “It really just has a super nice energy.”

The diminutive Morsø wood stove and its hearth of local Criehaven beach stone gives off enough heat to warm the entire cottage.

A gravel trail winds through greenery into the entryway of the home, reinforcing the parklike nature of the site.

A large en suite bathroom adjoins the principal bedroom, featuring bright-white walls that reflect natural light and high windows that frame the sky.

Walnut cabinets and quartz counters in the primary bathroom incorporate non-toxic, water-based finishes.

The primary bath has a custom vanity and a textured tile backsplash.

Monika and Darren Bennett worked with SM Studio on their custom home in Vancouver, B.C. The main house has 2703 square feet, plus a 514 square foot garage/studio on the rear alley, with a courtyard and pool in between the two buildings.

A new bathroom off the hallway in the extension is divided with a half bath in front for guests. Additional square and rectangular tiles in the bathroom mimic traditional tiling patterns found in the original cottage bathrooms.

The team had a lot of discussions with the owner on the striped pattern of the Moroccan tile in the main bathroom, which makes the space feel larger and blends the green and cream palette used throughout the house.

The 2,000-square-foot home now has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a guest house with a bedroom and bathroom.

Sundius and Ichiki sided the home with sand-colored stucco that ties to the other stucco-clad homes in the neighborhood.
