Gloria Montalvo’s weekend getaway on a reserve in central Chile is just 580 square feet, but the entire forest is its living room. Designed by architect Guillermo Acuña, it features a transparent facade over a skeletal pine frame.

White Marmoreal flooring with shades of green, gold, and orange and dark green-painted cabinetry accented with brass pulls add whimsy in the laundry area.

The designer dressed the breakfast nook with a custom table inspired by Eero Saarinen, a Louis Poulsen-designed pendant, geometric-patterned wallpaper by Pierre Frey, pale green Farrow & Ball wall paint, and a bench upholstered with vinyl from Kravet.

The designers recreated the carport as a dining area, arranging the space with a living wall, a painted brick wall, a tk ceiling with recessed lighting, a teak table and bench, and director chairs.

Dobrinski painted the existing brick wall in the outdoor dining area, applying geometric forms that lend a whimsical note.

In the driveway between the duplex and the garage is a patio made of pavers Kyle found at a dump in Saint Paul. He hopes to one day bring in an Airstream to renovate as a play space for the kids.

“We wanted to make it feel like a surf shack. It was important to us to have a low-key, slow, easy lifestyle,” Kyle says.

In another example of the design’s creative approach to storage, Morna and David use a pulley system rigged with hardware from Fleet Farm to hoist a Jeff Hull–designed surfboard out of the way.

In turning the second level of the garage behind their duplex into a multifunctional workspace without breaking the bank, Kyle Huberty relied on friends, family, and the community at large.

“The cabinetry ribbon also extends into the walk-in closet, which accommodates hanging racks, drawers, and open shelving, in addition to a compact washer and dryer,” says Jones. “In such a tiny little space, I think any amount of visual consistency creates a calming environment.”

The white oak detailing and terrazzo continues on the vanity, which also has a Kohler Purist faucet.

A wall-mounted media cabinet provides a waist-high shelf, and is joined by a Samsung Frame TV. White walls provide negative space, so the room isn’t dominated by the cabinetry. To the left, Jones added a built-in banquette at the windows.

“We wanted to create a really cozy nook,” says Jones of the new bed area of the apartment. A mirror at the end of the bed visually expands the interior space.
