“Those living rooms are always a challenge in brownstones, to furnish in a thoughtful way,” says Cuttle, pointing to the narrow dimensions of the room, the low window sills, and abundance of woodwork taking up wall space. A curving Carl Hansen sofa floats in front of the bay window, so as not to block the light and allowing easy sightlines. The chairs and coffee table are from Lawson Fenning and the rug is Jardan.

"We raised the bedroom walls to meet the ceiling and designed built-in storage that's truly tailored to our client's needs," says Eng-Goetz. "In addition, we designed an upholstered paneling which adds a sense of privacy and visual intrigue, as it's essentially a large, felt collage. We also designed the custom vanity and bed.

The living room features a built-in sofa with drawers for additional storage, custom-made by Trio Upholstery. The bleached red oak storage cabinets were made by L&Z Specialties, Inc. to match the kitchen cabinets. The wall sconce is from Serge Mouille.

Several trees were planted in the covered conservatory space in front of the kitchen/dining area. This looks out, past the bath and shower room, to the courtyard, which is planted with 80% edible flowers and herbs. The windows and glazed doors are all fully operational, which allows natural air to flow throughout the interior, and the fragrance from the herbs and flowers in the garden to permeate the home.
