Kristin Johns: My husband and I moved into our house last February‚ and the bathroom was one of the main spaces we wanted to redo. It had a tiled-in standalone tub and a single vanity‚ and it was laid out in a way that was more closed off‚ which made it feel small and dark. I do a lot of work with skincare brands and bath and body products‚ so I knew I needed a bathroom that had good lighting and photographed well. As it was‚ it looked too outdated. We wanted our whole house to be bright and airy‚ but still cozy‚ and that definitely extended to the bathroom‚ where we decided to knock down some walls and add a window.

My favorite feature is the shower. Before‚ it was tiny‚ but the new one is huge‚ with big glass panels‚ gold fixtures‚ and small marble honeycomb tile on the floor. Adding wood and gold accents made it warmer. If you do too much white‚ it can feel hotel-ish. The whole layout is completely different from what it was before. Now I’m actually looking for opportunities to take videos in the bathroom.

Make It Yours

Vanity Lighting: “We have recessed lighting that delivers bright daytime light‚ which is good for makeup‚” says Kristin. “But we put Edison bulbs in the fixture above the two mirrors‚ because they’re warmer and they’re calming at night.”

Subway Tile: The subway tile‚ which fully encloses the shower’s sides‚ extends only partway up the wall around the bathtub‚ offering protection from splashes while creating a visual frame. It also leaves room for a shelf holding decorative objects above.

Hanging Plant: Kristin keeps plants throughout her home‚ but she’s especially happy with the ceiling-mounted variegated vinca vine in her bathroom. “I love plants in bathrooms because they thrive there‚” she says. “This one looks so nice and ethereal.”

Matching Bottles: A self-described “packaging freak” who prefers her toiletries to look orderly‚ Kristin bought matching plastic amber-colored bottles and created tags for them with a label maker. “Those tiny details can have such a big impact‚” she says.
