Built on a tight budget of $120,000, a retirement home in the mountains delivers unexpected contemporary design to a rural township.

The contractor, Eames Construction, experimented with the client on the site-blackened cedar siding. All the materials are environmentally-friendly and sustainable, in addition to being highly fire-resistant.

The rear curtain wall system opens to an outdoor patio raised above the tree-covered landscape.

The Lofthouse is built one of the many hills separating it from the couple’s main residence. "Excavation was a challenge, as we wanted to maintain as much of the existing landscape as possible, but needed to clear out trees for the foundation," says Tarah.

To break up the long living room, Pettit created a walnut bookcase at the entrance.

An 860-square-foot in-law suite for the clients’ parents is located on the northeast side of the home.
