After: What began as a simple escape for one has grown into a place of return. “When I bought it, I just wanted somewhere to get away,” Andrew says. “Now it’s where the whole family comes together every winter.”

Thomas loves crazy powder rooms, but leans towards softer tones for master bathrooms. Here, she adds a bit of glam with chrome Atrio fixtures by Grohe and antique brass Hinsdale sconces by Hudson Valley Lighting. “I am so happy with how this midcentury-inspired pattern using Fireclay Tile in Daisy and Sea Glass turned out. It’s dramatic, but still soothing and soft. The sconces reminded me of modernist versions of soap bubbles, and I loved them for a bathroom environment.”

The tile looks vintage, but was selected and installed as part of the renovation. On the vanity: Kristall Tumbler in Blush by Decor Walther from the Oliver Thom Store.

The studio’s second floor serves as a library. The sunken bathtub offers interrupted sightlines across the space and out into the backyard. The tub, like the library’s floor, is made of concrete.

As a nod to the textured limestone at Bear Run, Sara and Jeremy chose concrete masonry blocks for both the interior and the exterior of kYodai. The club chairs are from Restoration Hardware and the windows and doors throughout are by Andersen.

One of Mandy’s many Pandemic home-improvement projects was learning to plumb via the new mini hot tub in the backyard.

The couple took advantage of numerous municipal programs when landscaping the backyard. Mandy recently completed a free course through LADWP, who also promotes resources for the SoCal Turf Replacement Program, to become a certified California Native Plant Landscape: “There is an amazing amount of knowledge and resources for transitioning yards with more native/drought-tolerant plants through LADWP and the Theodore Payne Foundation,” says Mandy.

The arched glass window in the front of the home brings ample light in, while the new glass patio door at the back floods the kitchen and dining area with sunlight.

Additional storage hidden under the breakfast nook bench helps maximize every square inch.
