Built in 1933, this Bauhaus-inspired home was designed for the family of well-known composer and pianist Henry Cowell by the renowned master architectural firm Morrow & Morrow, a few years after Irving Morrow designed the architectural components of the Golden Gate Bridge.

With a new baby on the way and the soon-to-be grandmother moving in, Seattleites Ilga Paskovskis and Kyle Parmentier asked Best Practice Architecture to expand their detached garage into a 570-square-foot ADU, which they now call the Granny Pad. “We can see the joy it brings Grandma when the baby comes over to visit,” says Kyle. “It’s the best part of her day.”

Interesting dormers and protrusions add volume and dimension to the non-dominant sides of the home. “Paying just as much attention to the two sides of the A-frame as to the end walls ensured that the home would be striking and attention-grabbing from all angles,” shares Mather.

The room features walnut flooring and built-in closets of the same material that were custom-made by Kenwood Cabinetry.

The cabinet has an antique look, but it was designed and painted by Zachary.

A Murphy bed in one bedroom folds seamlessly into the wall, leaving the rhythm of redwood panels uninterrupted.

Frameless bedroom windows extend beyond the floor and ceiling. "Since it's such a small house, it was really important to have this connection between the interior and exterior," says the couple.

Each of the couple's three children have their own rooms, with built-in desks and storage units. The bedrooms have rift and quartered white oak flooring.

The intimacy of Casa Santísimo is exemplified in the bedroom—JJRR Arquitectura+Modica-Ledezma installed warm wood walls to contrast with the serene forest views.

Native flora features heavily in the design, like the modern interpretations of 19th-century botanical drawings found in the guest rooms. The artwork on the far right is made with poetry from a colonial-era journal that the in-house design team found at the local public library.

The master bedroom opens up to a private garden terrace and views of the treetops.

In the dressing room, the ceiling is papered with Ellie Cashman Summer Squall in midnight blue—a little pop of pattern to peek at as you’re heading through to the back door.

Each twin bed in the bunk room over the back porch gets its own Morgan Black sconce from Crate and Barrel. The rest of the furniture was sourced by the homeowners.

The chandelier in the principle bedroom is an antique bubble glass design from Vieux in Houston.

A small recess is built into the wall, acting as a side table.

Custom walnut millwork, courtesy of Brininstool + Lynch, provides a crafted, minimalist touch in the bedroom that overlooks the pool.
