The guest bedroom, as well as other parts of the house, have a plywood accent wall. “My family's in the plywood business and they have been making plywood for over a hundred years,” says Holly. “This is not your typical Home Depot plywood. This is really clear with a nice veneer on it. So, we were able to do a special run of plywood that had a really beautiful grain to it, and it adds so much richness to our home.” The sconces are from Cedar & Moss.

After entering the front door, tomato red shaker-style cabinetry in the mudroom sets the tone for a warm family home.

The brass backsplash was a risky experiment carried off by Natalie, who started with unlacquered 4x8 foot sheets, then gave them patina by covering them in vinegar, ketchup, and salt, and leaving them out in the sun. The resulting pattern was aligned as carefully as possible, and the surface sealed. “We just had to essentially cut the topography into a way that felt really great,” says Natalie.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom is dressed in a calming blue, complete with bespoke wooden detailing and cabinetry. A similar palette can be found in the ensuite bath.

The couple designed the oak built-ins to tuck under the existing high windows, making sure the new wood tones meld with the existing wood on the floor and ceiling.

Interior textures

A work area is filled with wood for the second bedroom.

Neufeld left essential elements of the loft exposed, like the brick wall painted white at the rear of the living room, and a structural column seen here.

Original built-in shelves and cupboards in the living room offer plenty of storage. John Kay designed much of the home’s built-in timber furniture.

The passage that leads to the bedrooms doubles as a library, with large bookshelves and a reading window.
