In Salt Lake City, a place not renowned for progressive architecture, Brent Jespersen built a luminous canyon retreat—using his architect father and a famed Utah modernist as his guides.

Garcia clad the ADU’s exterior with a local Texas limestone, similar in color and texture to the main house, “just to tie the two together visually,” says the architect.

Where the roof meets the ground, the dramatic pitch serves a practical purpose: Local sheep have a habit of climbing on top of homes with sod roofs and then getting stuck, but if the angle is severe enough, they’re deterred from even trying.

Located on a clearing in the woods, the Cabin in La Juanita offers a quiet escape away from the bustling downtown of José Ignacio.

Steps from the living room is a formal dining area, drenched with natural light. "The house has so many windows, allowing it to capture soaring views on all sides," says Mark.

The single-level home in Los Angeles includes a large swimming pool and surrounding garden.

“The roof overhang extends the living space,” says Boyer, so the deck becomes a spot to entertain visiting friends and family. The couple have been working to restore the surrounding land, as well.

The cabin has charcoal-colored metal siding and a punchy yellow-green front door for contrast.

Boyer first visited the site in 2018 for the redesign. Having grown up in the area, it was awful to see the devastating effects of the fire, but there were also signs of regrowth just a year later. “The redwoods had started to grow a little fuzzy green against the charred black [bark],” says Boyer. “It was kind-of promising. It felt hopeful that nature was coming back so quickly.”

The Smiths’ new cabin, designed by Risa Boyer Architecture and completed in 2020, sits in the same spot as their previous home, on five acres on Mount Veeder, in Northern California. Somehow, the red chicken coop, which is constructed of wood, survived the fire with the chickens still alive inside.

The 399-square-foot homes in Greenville, South Carolina, created by Justin Draplin of Eclipse Cottages are clad in white-painted steel siding.
