The Hood River Residence features a generous outdoor patio area that collects the public spaces of the home into one large indoor/outdoor entertaining space.

The home’s undulating roof, composed of exposed wood beams and plywood sheathing, references the rolling terrain. A Cor-Ten steel–clad outdoor fireplace was built by BRD Construction; the same material was used for the interior fireplace, as surround on some windows, as cladding for the garage door, and on the chimney. The lounge chairs are from the Finn Collection from Design Within Reach. The architects created a principle suite by connecting an adjacent bathroom via pocket doors. A skylight in the bathroom ensures natural light flows throughout.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing allows guests to look from the kitchen island into the open living and dining area, and to the ocean views in the distance.

The guest wing includes a bunk room with eight beds located opposite the bunk bathroom.

To hide visual clutter, storage is hidden behind wood paneling. Built-in areas, like the reading nook, also contain secret storage.

Located in the storage area in the back of the kids' closet, the slide spirals down to the basement. "The contractors deserve the biggest kudos for keeping the slide secret during construction," says DeForest. "They installed the slide very early in the construction schedule, then diligently covered everything up and kept it off limits as a ‘mechanical space’ whenever the clients were on-site."

Serene natural materials were used throughout the house to weather well under harsh conditions, as well as to create the sublime color palette.

Designed by José Guedes Cruz, César Marques, and Marco Marinho of the Portugal-based firm Guedes Cruz Architects, The Wall House is laid out in an open-box plan, and is fitted with plenty of glass windows to enhance the synergy between its interior and exterior spaces.

The open-plan living, dining and kitchen are located in the largest wing.
