The front entrance has a dedicated storage space for surfboards and wetsuits.

Sugarhouse Design & Architecture lightened up the entry hall, thanks to interior fluted glass panels, white oak floors with a contrasting walnut inlay, and custom oak closets that reach to the ceiling (after removing the fussy tray feature there). The bench is custom-designed by Sugarhouse and fabricated by Elwood Design Co in Orange, CA, and the ceiling light is by Modern Forms.

Atelier Branco built 3,229 square feet of shelving units to house all of the client's texts, documents, and books.

The kitchens are fully equipped with a gas stove, refrigerator, and the gamut of small appliances. The wood-burning stove installed in both units has an insert on the top so that guests can bake small dishes.

Along with the sage, citrus trees irrigated by gray water from the house provide the couple with lemons and limes for mixing drinks, among other things.

The landscaping features encore azaleas, arborvitae, and Japanese cypress. An oak forest in the backyard provides a sense of privacy and seclusion.

Permeable hardscaping retains moisture and helps reduce the need for watering.

In another section of the yard, Cooper added varying-sized circular cement stepping stones, which lead toward an elevated planter filled with California-native plants.

Another water-saving project in Menlo Park includes a rock bed with succulents.
