Screened by the sliding door, Rosa cozies up with a book in the bedroom, while across the apartment Robert uses the hydraulic kitchen table as a work desk. “We wanted to explore the power of custom design by creating integrated furniture to maximize both efficiency and aesthetics,” says Rosa.

The kitchen acts as the family hub, its multicolored surfaces anchored by a black tile backsplash, sprinkled with dots of uncolored, earth-toned tile.

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

In 2020, In addition to designating three La Jolla houses as historic, the San Diego Historical Resources Board designated the house as historic and granted Liebhardt the status of “master” architect.

“We’re always throwing events,” says Paul, so the indoor/outdoor style was a great fit for them.

After considering concrete floors, the homeowners and Wilson decided on ceramic tile for a more natural but still durable, low-maintenance ease.

Uruguay’s beach towns dot the Atlantic coast northeast of the capital, Montevideo, becoming less crowded and developed the farther up you go. The second floor of Sticotti’s house floats above its neighbors to take in views of the ocean a couple of blocks away. It’s capped by a roof deck that the architect says is “great for watching fireworks.”

Clerestory windows and walls of glass wrap around the home, infusing the interior spaces with an abundance of natural light.

The bus in action. For cooling, the couple purchased a $720 Coleman air conditioner, and there’s a $189 Fan-tastic Vent for circulation. They also prepared for outdoor adventures with a $240 awning and $60 bug screens. The bus comes equipped with solar panels ($120), a Victron inverter/charger ($1,280), as well as gray and fresh water tanks ($518).
