The covered kitchen and dining area is defined at the ground level with Borealis slab in Smoked Pine—an elegant wood imitation patio slab that retains the warmth of wood but features innovative Klean-Bloc technology that eliminates the need for maintenance.

Combine native plants with rockscapes to create gardens that don’t need excessive irrigation. Here, Techo-Bloc’s Industria 600 series slab in Greyed Nickel was imaginatively used to create contrast between the more organic stones and rocks, as well as functional walkways for seating and a fire pit.

They also added a floating teak shelf from Semihandmade, which was a pretty close match to the Lauan wood paneling in the rest of the house.

Studio Prineas extended a historic Federation home in Sydney to be stylistically distinct from, and yet subtly reflective of, the original residence’s features. A sleek rear addition encompasses a new bedroom and study nook on the upper floor, with an open-plan living, kitchen, and dining area on the ground level. Sliding glass walls provide full access to the garden and pool.

"My background is in thinking about the influence of the body on architecture—and where people connect with it," says Kristen, who’s also a dancer.

The white subway tile backsplash was given a unique touch with a stacked layout, rather than a typical off-set design.
