Two barn structures sit perpendicular to one another with a glass entry foyer connecting them.

Furniture designer Ash Dipert transformed three disused structures behind his parent’s Craftsman home in Bakersfield, California, into a fun and functional accessory dwelling unit.

Aylott & Van Tromp's Nokken modular cabin, a hotel-suite-like accommodation that can be adapted to suit almost any remote location, is clad with black-stained European larch and perforated metal paneling.

Floor-to-ceiling glazing and a linear skylight help welcome the landscape within the cabin’s small footprint.

Now, an eight-foot sliding door brings light into the kitchen and enables fluid movement between inside and out. The wider steps can serve as seats during a party, and they make for a graceful transition to the yard.

"When we started out, Casey wasn’t married and wasn’t dating anyone," says architect Arthur Furman. "So the original project brief was less about bedrooms and bathrooms, and more about the character of the home. Specifically, the shape. Casey had an image in his mind of a house he had photographed early in his career in a wooded area of Maine. The house was a basic shape—as one would draw as a child—just a box with a gabled roof." The home's simple gabled shape is emphasized by the use of burnished stucco on all sides.

Conveniently located in their backyard, the office allows the couple to run their practice while staying close to their kids.

“The roof overhang extends the living space,” says Boyer, so the deck becomes a spot to entertain visiting friends and family. The couple have been working to restore the surrounding land, as well.

The primary bedroom for the owners is situated next to the outdoor storage and shower area with overhanging roof for ample shade.

The concrete-lined pool measures 16'x38'.
