"I get a lot of personal satisfaction from the stairs and continuous handrail that runs from the rooftop deck to the ground floor," says Adair. "The stairs and this handrail detail took quite some time to perfect before they were made."

"Following natural daylight, going up along the steel staircase, we can see modified skylights, vertical lighting windows, and a pure outdoor space," says Liu. "This is the area we modified most. The whole building starts from light and vertical space."

The mahogany-paneled vestibule features gently angled stairs that rise to the living area, which boasts an impressive atrium.

“We took away a very thick, heavy staircase that led to the loft, and designed one that had a much lighter look,” Wåhlin says. “The new one, made of steel, looks simple and indeed light—but is in fact super heavy and was a real challenge to construct.”

The narrow, steel and-wood staircase maximizes space for the rooms.

Inspired by the string lights, vintage light fixtures have been repainted and fitted with red fabric cables.

Raj and Watts extended the fireplace column to the ceiling to highlight the room’s expansive scale, and had it coated in concrete plaster. It was important to retain the wood-burning fireplace—a rarity in the city—but “we wanted to re-clad it in a material that also spoke to the industrial past of the building,” says Raj.

White-oiled oak was used for the floors, while fir was chosen for the cabinets and trim.

The spiral staircase has been revamped with new wood stair treads that tie in with the wood floors.

A simple metal railing and Red Acacia flooring create a minimalist aesthetic for the loft area.

The couple made the house feel even more spacious by flooding a series of levels with natural light.

A white-painted steel-plate staircase leads from the third floor to the attic level.

The shower surround tile is I COCCI by Fioranese Ceramica sourced through Olympia Tile/Beaver Tile.

The floor tile is from Virginia Tile, while the wall tile is from Daltile.
