The main house entrance leads into the kitchen from the courtyard. The bamboo flooring continues across the first floor.

Even on the stairs, wood remained a prominent feature, with a wood handrail, treads, and a side wall with vertical slats.

A custom bench was built into the indoor garden, its cushions made with Rebecca Atwood fabric and complemented by a Christopher Wrobleski patchwork pillow as well as a Mondos side table. The wall painting is by Abel Macias.

The breakfast nook's custom bench includes cushioning covered with Maharam Fabric. Its oak base matches the floors.

The kitchen and den exist as one continuous space, with one side of the kitchen providing added oak bookshelves for the den. A tomato-red post's color was inspired by flax plants outside.

Emily detailed the kitchen to have more storage than before, thanks to custom cabinetry she designed, and which was fabricated and installed by J.V. The New Carpentry. The backsplash tile is 2x6 Zia Tile in 'Burnt Sugar.' The stove is a Thor electric range and the refrigerator an iio Retro Mod Fridge RM1, both part of the $4215 the couple spent on appliances.

The former laundry space was refashioned into a windowside booth, its built-in shelves, walls and ceilings painted red. It's become popular with kids and visitors.

A silver travertine border and toe kick define the base of the kitchen cabinetry.

When Hess learned that Charlie and Todd had spent a few years living on a boat, she decided to take cues from nautical casework for the cabinet design. "[It] has to be so considered and exacting and very utilitarian," says Hess of boatbuilding tradition.

The Invisacook induction range sits beneath the porcelain countertops, giving the couple, who love to cook together, a few extra feet of prep space. The architects removed the original hinges on the cabinets, replacing them with a hidden version that modernizes the look.

A custom shelf in the kitchen doubles as a pot rack, and a thoughtfully placed roll of butcher paper is a favorite drawing spot for the couple's young daughter.

Marlatt designed and installed a built-in desk with a folding top to save space in the study room. “That's also something I'd like to build again,” says Marlatt. “Every time you do something that's a little bit experimental, you realize how much better it would be the next time. It's all prototyping.”

The restored wood finishes on the walls and the exposed ceiling were all painted white. “The wall is actually the original tongue-and-groove Redwood, 7/8ths of an inch thick,” says Marlatt.

The hood vent here is tiled for a pop of added texture.
