“When I walk through the house, I remember putting the plywood on the ceilings, which was not fun at all. But there’s a satisfaction in having been part of that process,” notes Craig.

A gentle-intervention approach was taken to landscaping the garden under the skilled creative direction of landscape designer studio Florian Wild, whose owner happens to be Rod’s son.

Powder-coated red steel mullions and orange doors add warmth to the industrial-leaning material palette. According to homeowner Toni, who admits she was initially resistant, architect Gregory Katz pushed for the orange doors. "I'm so glad he wore me down," she says. "They are beautiful!"

The new concrete wall along the western perimeter contains a walled garden with a secondary entrance. Cream-colored LOHAS Nilo Rustic bricks clad the new extension to remain "sympathetic yet differentiated" from the existing red-brick Edwardian.

“Sometimes you go with emotions rather than logic,” says Woodhull founder Caleb Johnson. “I just wanted to renovate the little Pizza Hut look-alike my son told me looked like a blowfish.”

A section drawing shows how the nook-like living spaces on the upper levels revolve around the central atrium. The air gaps between the envelope and the interior are as wide as 13 feet in some places. In addition to insulating the house, they conceal technical systems and provide storage space.
