Cast Architecture started a renovation on this property at the start of 2020, and finished a year later.

The entryway features a family heirloom in the form of an antique dresser, which sits beneath a West Elm chandelier.

The living room features a Malibu sofa from Kasala, and it sits above a Moroccan wool carpet the owner inherited.

The private outdoor space showcases the renovation's south-facing windows, which were installed to connect the indoors with the yard.

New concrete pathways, all built by Jake and Antony, are arranged around an artful tool shed, which has a weathered steel wall punched with a pattern from the Faroe Islands in Denmark, where Sigrid is from. “That was a nod to Sigrid’s heritage,” says Bassett. The shed also acts as a privacy screen for the patio below it.

New windows, lighter floors, and crisp white walls lighten up the interior dramatically. Greenery NYC also redesigned the courtyard, making sure to leave a decorative screen from the 60s in a nod to the building’s history.

It was important to ensure that the writer’s work space connect seamlessly with the rest of the apartment. The built-in shelving echoes the library shelves downstairs, and the white oak desk, designed by e.g. Projects, is consistent with the white oak cabinetry throughout. The top is wrapped in leather, in a nod to traditional writer’s desks.

Floor-to-ceiling glass now leads to the outdoors. The fireplace surround is blackened steel, and the upper cabinet hides the TV, its slatted details echoing the screens elsewhere in the house.

New custom walnut cabinetry syncs with the rest of the built-ins throughout the home, to create a pleasing rhythm in the open plan. The backsplash is Heath Ceramics tile, and the counter is Pental Quartz. Open shelves at the rear overlook a cozy den, and allow sightlines out the new windows at the front of the home.

Now, there are sightlines from the entry to the backyard. The dining table, surrounded by Wegner Wishbone chairs, is by Campagna, a Portland-based design studio.

Risa Boyer Architecture guided the whole house remodel of this 1955 Portland home. Lillyvilla Gardens executed a new landscape plan for the property, including this updated entry sequence, while Boyer added more glass to suit the midcentury façade.

“Watching the sunrise and moonrise from the living room is gobsmacking,” says James.

The main bathroom features a soaking tub, Hansgrohe faucets, and bathroom tiles from Heath Ceramics and American Universal Penny.

The oak island and cupboards offset the kitchen’s black IKEA cabinetry.

Hilary and her husband, Jimmy, opted for a functional, restrained material palette. In the dining room, Rejuvenation pendants hang above a table by Hedge House and chairs from Hay.

French doors open above a mahogany bench onto the deck (below), which is oriented with the equinox path. “I read that in Japan, builders spend seasons on the land observing where the sun rises and sets throughout the year,” says Ryan. “I asked Jason to consider that in siting the cabin.”

Light oak panels by Finsa clad both the kitchen cabinetry and the built-in units that appear in the living room and entryway. "We used natural materials where we could, but we were also mindful of keeping high-touch surfaces durable," explains Anne-Marie Armstrong, co-principal of AAmp Studio.

In the open-plan living area, one of the highlights is the natural light-filled kitchen from Italian manufacturer Armony.

A fire pit between two wings of the home encourages outdoor living.
