“Finding this house was like finding a treasure,” says Jessica. “A lot of people who saw it wanted to tear it down. But we wanted to do right by it. The pool has become a shared social space—it’s a very good hangout.”

While updating the aesthetic, it was also important to Leanne to modernize the mechanicals of the home to work for her family. “Those needed to be done and done right before we ‘closed up’ the walls and finished the visual aspect,” she says. “When starting a new interior design project, cosmetic changes, like picking out paint colors is the fun part. But what's behind the walls—the electrical, plumbing updates, structural check-ins, HVAC upgrades, the not-so-glamorous stuff—those are often not talked about.”

“The structures create spaces that bridge the outside and inside, so it’s one continuous space,” Thomas says. Terraces act as a path that border the getaway and connect it to the garden lounge and studio. He added the round deck when his architecture partner told him he felt like the scheme needed a circle.

Cobblestones reference the surroundings. “In winter, the frozen ground pushes out rocks that farmers collect in the spring to build walls,” Thomas says. “This is how they used the rocks on the farms back in the day.”
