Just because your kitchen is on the smaller side doesn’t mean you can’t make it as efficient and effective as possible.

Architect Jai Kumaran and his partner, Lindsay Merkle, transformed a badly neglected ridgetop property in Scappoose, Oregon, into a retreat, completing a 3,000-square-foot prefabricated workshop and studio suite as the first phase of a larger planned creative compound where they could live, work, and gather with family and friends.

Set on the shores of a Norwegian lake in the secluded nature reserve of Nordre Øyeren, only 25 minutes drive from Oslo, sits a tiny abode that blends a striking mirrored facade with a quintessential timber cabin. The mirrored glass blends into the landscape, making it the perfect spot to watch the local wildlife from—think small deer, squirrels, and more than 270 different bird species.

Le MICA is a strikingly sleek micro-home located in the Maelström recreational forest, just 25 minutes from Old Quebec. The tiny home comprises two simple rectilinear forms stacked atop each other and inserted in an open “box” form that functions as a covered deck area and frames the panoramic views of Laurentian Park. Wood burning heaters in the living area and on the deck keep the home cosy even in the depths of winter.

Custom oak cabinetry defines the kitchen from the adjacent dining room. Terra cotta toned grout in the Bedrosian ‘Makoto’ tile backsplash is a hint of color, alongside the Ago “Kirkus” Chandelier in Terra Cotta above the table. A folding glass door now opens to the new exterior deck.

The family home that residents Tyler Lepore, Lisa Giroday, builders Hanson Land & Sea, and September Architecture devised in the Sunshine Coast region of British Columbia, Canada, is wrapped with cedar and brick, tying to its wooded surround, which is only a four-minute walk to the ocean. Leslie and her daughter, Sophie, stand on the deck with their labradoodle, Bean. “The two things about the home that caught my eye were the cedar siding and the folding glass wall that opens it up,” says Leslie. “You don’t get a better view than this,” Sophie adds. “We pretty much live on the deck, so to be able to walk in and out is ideal.”

Twelve electrically heated windows pierce the facade, framing views of the surrounding forest and fields.

Polished concrete walls continue into one of the bathroom, where circular windows with colorful glass adds a playful touch. A large home office area also awaits on the lower level.

A freestanding tub in the bedroom is a little touch of hotel luxury.

Polished concrete flooring enhances the home's sleek, modern aesthetic, while also complementing the bespoke wooden details found throughout the living area and kitchen.

Upon arrival, steps descend to the main entrance, which opens to spacious living areas.
