Everything brought to the island must be transported by boat or barge, so furniture is minimal. Carsten purchased the 1960 Rais wood stove more than a decade ago with the intention of using it in a cabin one day.

Keeping sustainability in mind, the architects have cladded the structure's interior with timber.

This antique dresser was given new purpose by implementing it as a bathroom vanity. Built into the wall, and custom tiled, this piece is the star against a green multi toned tiled bathroom wall with a flush mirror and black and gold sconces.

Gables and corrugated metal siding near the entrance hark back to the neighborhood’s historic housing styles. “I wanted to express these familiar elements in a contemporary way,” says Barker.

Windows frames the architect’s built-in desk, which overlooks the water. In the corner, a cast iron wood stove provides heat on dreary days. And opposite the workstation, there’s a single bunk that folds down from the wall. It also doubles as a couch when the family wants to use the space for backyard hang outs.

Jordan and Shalini revamped the kitchen with a sleek pendant light, matte-black contact paper on the cabinets and counters, and a stainless-steel backsplash behind the range. They also extended the counters with butcher blocks and repaired the leaky tin ceiling.

"In some ways the strongest attributes of the house are probably the outside spaces,” says Court. The original cedar deck was replaced with Kebony decking that wraps around a century-old cherry tree. A pair of Andy rockers from Mamagreen face an ottoman by Kenneth Cobonpue. The accordion doors are a NanaWall SL-60 system that allows the main room of the guesthouse to open completely to the deck.

SHED replaced the windows with new wood units of the same style. Note how the shelving at the half-wall aligns perfectly with the window mullions.

Nestled amongst the classic cornish cottages, Guthens modernity shows itself. Over time the larch cladding will silver to blend in with its surroundings.
