The simplified post-and-beam construction reflects Bob’s penchant for economy. “The house is designed on a sixteen-foot grid, which reduces a lot of waste of materials in random lengths and sizes,” he says. “I was able to build it entirely out of dimensional lumber rather than engineered lumber.” The wood is painted a custom charcoal color from Sherwin-Williams.

To bring color to the mostly-white kitchen, Chet Architecture's design took color inspiration from the landscape outside, be it blue from the pool for beams and the trellis, or green from the cypresses for the Villa Lagoon concrete tile.

The renovated kitchen features limestone countertops, vertically oriented white Bedrosians Makoto porcelain tile, with custom ash cabinetry, maple floors, and Muuto barstools.

The kitchen was designed to be functional, for a family of five that likes to cook. Cabinetry and countertops resemble the colors of the wall panels and metal framing.

The panels were fabricated using sand quarried from the site, which was mixed with a small amount of cement and dried in layers, each showing a slightly different hue.

The dining and living space are a few steps down from the rest of the house, creating a wider volume for these public areas.
