The architects did not want "the operating theater" of can lights, so Ernesto designed a custom fixture consisting of a simple steel plate that disguises "cheap can lights," seen here in the upper hallway. "It looks like a $1,500 fixture, but it's like $300," he says.

Outside, the glass border almost disappears, so as not to interfere with the architecture of the home. “It’s a full glass panel that meets all safety codes with planters at the bottom for added warmth and dimension,” explains Uzcategui.

The floating oak staircase in the first-floor family room leads to the rooftop garden, which features a lounge area, grill, and small bar room with a restroom. Bespoke oak shelving behind the stair offers a display area for books and other objects.

An upstairs desk can provide a place for Jen’s work or their kids’ homework. When not in use, it disappears into the wall.

In a family home in Mill Valley, California, Lauren Goldman of l’oro designs kept her clients’ goals of “modern yet accessible” in mind while also looking for opportunities to add functionality. This proved successful when she discovered that the empty space under the steel-and-glass stair landing was the perfect scale for children to sit and read under. The team was inspired to create a kid-sized library, turning a useless space into a perfectly cozy reading nook.

The Hampton House is located just outside of Charleston's historic district in the Wagener Terrace neighborhood, across from the park it's named after.
