Marble envelopes the bathroom, a nod to the homeowner’s bathing experiences in Japan and Europe. “He wanted to pass that experience onto his visitors,” says Elsley. “It’s a scoured marble, not just high-finish, so it looks and feels like a sculpture.”

“Buildings pay homage to mid-century design principles and depart from traditional beach house typologies to focus on emphasising the site’s remote, complex and ephemeral qualities,” says Elsley.

Clad in cypress and charged with color, the North Fork getaway of author Julie Satow and editor Stuart Elliott is something to write home about.

The meditation room overlooks a nearby hilltop in one of the clients' favorite views, framed by floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

The house features Bayerwald sliding windows and highly insulated fixed glass; low-VOC paint from Benjamin Moore; and big overhangs to the south to shield summer sun and allow winter light. It was important to the family to integrate sustainable materials and strategies.

Rocks dug up during construction were saved and incorporated into the poured-concrete floors and walls. Hydronic heating coils in the floor are augmented by a wood stove during the damp winters.

Patio

Terreo Studio aimed to make this seven-unit apartment complex look “unrecognizable, so it stays a mystery from the outside.” From the white stone facades, through the interior marble and complimentary soft palette of the furnishings, to the open floor plan that meanders between courtyards, the architects took cues from Grecian architecture: Natural materials are used in abundance to create a structure that embraces the environment.

A shed roof descends from the living/dining area, extending beyond its edge to shield an expansive porch from the elements.
