The outdoor shower can be accessed either through the master bathroom or from the back porch, which is nice after a long bike ride on a hot Houston day--especially because the couple stores several of their nine bikes (including a tandem) on one of the interior walls of the shower space.

The house is essentially an upscale surf shack. The design outdoors facilitates easy showering, clean up, and board storage.

In the master bathroom, the Smiths worked with a Boston-based company, Artaic, on the mosaic tile.

The girls rinse off in the partially enclosed shower outside the master bathroom. “The kids really love the ups and downs and ins and outs of the house,” says Daniela.

At one end of the L-shaped terrace, interior designer Martine Brisson included room for a full outdoor kitchen so the family could prepare meals without stepping inside during the warmer months.

The yard also features a rustic outdoor shower.

The wood screen concealing the outdoor shower was painted yellow and white, matching the color scheme in the guest bathroom.

"We made the space as flexible as possible to allow for numerous potential uses in all four seasons," says architect Tom Kundig. During the summer months, the property is especially lively as the residents take advantage of their waterfront location.
