While the quartz kitchen island isn’t at a lower height, the room’s comfortable layout provides plenty of space for Simerjeet’s wheelchair.

In San Francisco, Butler Armsden Architects completed an extensive renovation of a 1906 Victorian townhome which centered on maximizing daylight.

For a bathroom in the new addition, the architects utilized the former addition's rocky foundation, complemented by zellige tile.

With input from her clients, Barensfeld used a computer to generate the circular patterns that were carved into a pair of Cor-Ten steel screens with a water-jet cutter. The perforations allow light and the green of the surrounding Koi bamboo to filter into the space while preserving privacy.

In the flat’s living room, midcentury modern art and furniture harmonize with the rich floor tiles, opulent molded ceilings. and original pine wood doors. Prints by Gordon Matta-Clark line the wall near a 1950s Danish dining table that’s paired with Eames chairs. A painting by Kuuti Lavonen hangs above a pink chair and ottoman by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

The lofted space shag carpet was replaced with bouncy cream colored popcorn Berber Carpet to spark feelings of summer camp nostalgia.

The serene primary bath features Andersen 100 Series windows, made of durable Fibrex. “This allowed us to place the windows in a wet environment without concern,” Angaran says.

Lee helped the couple source lighting, like the Nuura Anoli pendants above the kitchen island. “We're constantly having meals at home,” says Serena. “We get a CSA and I like to cook, so it's nice to have a lot of space in the kitchen, and have it be really functional for cooking and entertaining.”

The kitchen is adorned with Fireclay olive-green tile on the backsplash that ties to the green-painted custom millwork of the lower cabinetry.

The half-wall that divides the living room and dining room is walnut, and was a clever way to separate the living and dining zones, and wrap the structural posts, which were painted a dark grey. There’s a television lift inside the cabinet that allows the TV to be stowed when not in use. The couch is from Design Within Reach, and the flooring throughout is white oak.

The primary suite also has a large walk-in closet.

The modern addition has the primary bathroom, with a soaking tub placed below picture windows.

The new foyer is more open and bright, the removed closet and stairway wall allowing the light to fill the rest of the space. The hanging light is by Copenhagen's &Tradition.
