An architectural designer and an artist harnessed the collective power of their design firm to remake a dilapidated mid-century gem into a hillside perch for their family.

Lambert pours wine in the kitchen, which is defined by a low concrete-block wall and serves as the home’s central core. The seating-area chairs are from Herman Miller.

The great room opens onto a wood deck cantilevered over the hillside, with glass pocket doors able to fold away for indoor-outdoor living.

For the backsplash, the homeowner chose ceramic tiles in a honeycomb pattern by Portland-based Clayhaus to compliment the walnut-faced cabinetry.

When construction was temporarily delayed, architect and homeowner set to work designing built-in cabinetry for every space, including the living room.
