Designed for Caltech professor Graham Laing and his wife, not only as a home but also as a suitable space for him to lecture 25-30 students and store volumes of books.

Both guest and primary bedrooms include an entire south facing of glass doors that open to the rear yard.

A vintage Cado Poul Cadovius wall unit provides extra storage.

The ceilings are constructed from solid cedar wood.

The property is home to Japanese maple, wisteria, cedar, cherry blossom, and balsam fir trees.

The metal-topped side table is from Roche’s grandparents’ house and the lamp is vintage Vico Magistretti for Artemide.

To instill a soft juxtaposition to the brick and concrete in the house, Nolan specified Hycraft’s Carramar wool carpet in the living area. Set a step down, the “pit,” as Nolan refers to it, receives the low winter sun but is shielded from harsh summer rays by the deep eaves. The ledge becomes a casual seating area.
