At the floor outside the children’s bedrooms, Tay designed a coffee table-sized circular void in the floor slab with a glass top that connects these two levels visually and acoustically.

The modestly sized kitchen is enclosed to keep out animals.

The heart of the home is a spacious kitchen, built under the existing bovedilla ceiling, a method of construction that was popular in the region in the early 20th century, with rows of shallow brick walls set between exposed steel beams.

Workaday Design fashioned custom paneling that's a modern twist on the midcentury paneling they saw in Robert Rummer's own home.

The vintage mid-century modern chair is from the Alameda Flea Market, and the concrete flooring has a hard-trowel natural finish.

“We value feeling over a perfect or manufactured finish,” says Kathryn, “so we jumped at anything touchy-feely, such as the droplet-like tiles cladding bathroom wing walls and structural columns that we are constantly petting.” Texture is at play everywhere, from a bathroom’s pebble-wash terrazzo floors that wrap up walls to the lush landscaping outside.

The family gathers in the kitchen, which features oak cabinets, a concrete island, and brass fixtures. The backsplash is made of pink bricks hand-selected by Alix and Onur from a nearby brickyard. The mango wood pendants were purchased in a market in Bangkok.

The kitchen underwent the most dramatic change, being relocated to the back of the house adjacent to the living room. White Oak floors and casework and new Kolbe windows warm up the space. The pendant light is from Design Within Reach, and the bar stools are custom from Sean Woolsey.

By far the biggest transformation, the new kitchen enjoys high ceilings from the revamped roofline; all new casework, flooring, and finishes; and a large island. The stools are from 2xhome.

The guest room's bathroom features a sconce by Lindsey Adelman and all-green tiles. Since this bathroom is also the powder room, the owners wanted it to be fun.

The home’s single bathroom contains a vanity and mirror fabricated from old-growth redwood. The sink is cast concrete, and the faucet is from California Faucets. The inset wall shelf features a Japanese gouge texture done by Nick.
