The company sees it as a flexible color that can cover a room or punch up cabinetry.

Benjamin Moore’s 2024 color of the year, Blue Nova, is meant to evoke the excitement of travel.

A black, 18-inch Bosch dishwasher and black hardware from Schoolhouse Electric disappear against the cabinet fronts, rather than cluttering the small room with distracting detail.

The renovated basement studio is full of a beautiful mix of vintage treasures and modern pieces. “My goal was to create a casual warmth throughout the home that would live happily with the ‘fancy’ we inherited,” explains Leanne.

The entry is full of function, including a washer/dryer that hides behind a mod arrangement of floor-to-ceiling cabinetry made from painted MDF with walnut detailing.

In the dining room, Guillerme et Chambron armchairs from Maison Gerard surround a CB2 table. The ceiling light is by Lambert & Fils. In the kitchen, rich blue cabinetry with wood details from GD Arredamenti is topped with a Caesarstone “Aire Concrete” counter. The gold artwork is by Joyce Billet.

The round arches are echoed in the mirrors and other details.

The apartment had potential with windows looking over the city’s biggest green space, so a young couple traded out its old rugs, wallpaper, and tight floor plan.

In this living area, a built-in Murphy bed can be pulled down to create a flexible sleeping area when needed. This Murphy bed incorporates two small bedside nooks with built-in lighting.

Polished concrete floors and oversized quartz marble subway tiles outfit the second floor bathroom.

"I think of the bed as intimate space, and putting the bed away—having it out of sight when not in use—is satisfying," says Milan Hughston, who reconfigured his West Village apartment with the help of architect Joel Sanders. This custom-designed Murphy bed, concealed by day behind the gold curtain, is well built; it's ergonomically easy to lower and has a firm sleeping surface.

For the couple’s shared office, which is windowless, the team installed backlit panels to give the illusion of daylight entering the room.

The balance of new and old can be seen in how the kid’s bath received all new finishes, while Kaplan kept the floors, stair rail, and stained-glass skylight in the hall. “Throughout the day, as the sun moves, that color [from the stained-glass] just moves around and then hits the property line wall, and goes all the way down the stair,” says Kaplan.

A Floyd Platform bed and Headboard supports a mattress from Tuft and Needle and Parachute linens in a warm oatmeal color. The artwork is from the Poster Club.

Gibson built a window bench out of birch plywood and that was paired with an Ikea table and a vintage Cesca chair by Marcel Breuer in the dining nook.

Higgins and Gibson, a Footwear Designer at Nike, applied several coats of “the brightest generic factory white (basically primer),” says Higgins, to lighten up the interior considerably, and left the wood window trim in their natural state to draw the eye towards the river view.

The screened-in porch leads into an open great one on one half of the structure.

“The design for the house emerged from walking the property. We imagined that as we climbed up from the beach, we’d see little peeks of our home from behind the trees,” says Brad Horn, architect and resident.
