The prefab office is perfectly suited for the rugged, remote site and integrates seamlessly into the backyard.

The open living/dining area gives a good impression of Tas’s catholic approach to decorating, which includes mixing Panton chairs with antiques and homemade pieces.

Two friends spent three years reviving this 16th-century Basque church near Bilbao, Spain. Abandoned since the late 1970s, the church was in need of serious repair. The roof had caved in and vegetation had thoroughly invaded the structure. Built in the mid-16th century, with some add-ons in the form of an 18th-century bell tower and sacristy, the church had obvious archaeological and historical value.

In the living room, a Söderhamn sectional sofa from IKEA joins a Molded Plastic Rocker by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller and a Jøtul stove. The burlap pillows were crafted by Cori out of coffee bean sacks. “She has ideas about making stuff that I would never think of,” says Craig.

Corrugated steel borders the large lot, creating a quiet city oasis with private outdoor spaces.

The primary bedroom is located on the second floor. As the couple notes, "the house is designed so that you quickly pass through the second floor on your way to the studio."

The residence also includes a spacious roof deck, which frames sweeping city views. "We often enjoy cocktails and sunbathing, observing the weekend bustle of Venice from a perfect distance."

Large, colorful plantings selected by landscape architect Stefan Hammerschmidt stand out against the cool geometry of a pair of restored Rudolph Schindler homes—a third is nearby—in Inglewood, California.

The mezzanine was extended by 130 square feet and now holds a study organized by Rakks shelves.

The spaces are harmoniously linked by color and material palette. In the dining area, the round travertine table mirrors the paper lanterns by Isamu Noguchi suspended above, and vintage cane Cesca Chairs by Marcel Breuer completes the warm tableau.

Before: The converted loft had good bones but featured some questionable elements, such as the mirrored wall in the living room.

Joshua uses a signed Tizio Lamp by Richard Sapper both for work and relaxation. “I love being able to pull it from my desk all the way over my bed,” he says. “That’s something I could only do in a room this small.”

In the New York loft that he shares with two friends, industrial designer Joshua Skirtich covered one wall of his 8-by-11 bedroom/ design studio with a pegboard for organizing his tools. A plywood desk runs the length of the room, accommodating Joshua’s 3D-printing equipment at one end and clothing drawers at the other.

His collection of midcentury modern furniture—including an Eames Contract Table, molded Eames chairs, and chairs by Arne Jacobsen and Jørgen Rasmussen—found a home in the loft’s shared living/dining space.
