San Francisco transplants Heather Day and Chase McBride worked with Bay Area architect Ryan Leidner to create a striking rectilinear home in the California desert.

The headboard is a custom fabrication from a live oak felled on the property, made by DeVos Custom Woodworking and Jobe Fabrications and in collaboration with JCA. The headboard “brings so much texture and life into this tiny room,” says Corral. Custom steel shelves are poised below, with a sconce from Serena and Lily mounted atop.

The Mossam Dresser from Croft House sits with a Gubi Adnet Circulaire Wall Mirror.

In the primary bedroom, the leather headboard insert is from Citizenry, with a steel bed by Jobe Fabrications custom design in collaboration with JCA. The side tables are also a collaboration between Jobe Fabrications and JCA, with Hand and Eye Gooseberry pendant hanging above. The bedcover is by Vacilando Quilting.

Homeowners Izabel and Paul made a large open kitchen a top priority, insisting on counters at double the standard width.

The kitchen underwent the most dramatic change, being relocated to the back of the house adjacent to the living room. White Oak floors and casework and new Kolbe windows warm up the space. The pendant light is from Design Within Reach, and the bar stools are custom from Sean Woolsey.

Cracked Pepper is Behr’s 2024 color of the year. While forecasting the hue, the firm found that 74 percent of Americans would consider painting a room a dark color.

The new upstairs bathroom, inspired by a 1992 Robin Williams movie, juxtaposes hexagonal and rectangular white tiles, as well as blue grout with four pops of yellow metal (matching the color of the original house's front door).

In the relocated kitchen, on the annex's ground floor, a whole wall, from cabinets to backsplashes (as well as the adjacent island), was painted green, as if they're single pieces of furniture.

In the updated powder room, Hemlock walls compliment white Oak cabinetry and a faucet from Watermark.

The lower-level bathroom enjoys a door to the outdoors so the family can enter directly after surfing. Green Emser tiles are arranged in a unique alternating pattern, and the shower floor is from Concrete Collaborative.

A new plywood screen separates the entryway from the kitchen while visually connecting it to the renovated living and dining rooms.

Shelves flank the hall entry, with a powder room on the left and storage on the right. Sightlines allow for views to the backyard from the living room.

Neutral terrazzo flooring and plaster walls offer interest and texture in the upper level bath.
