Plants spill over the steel shelf above the copper-covered island bench, adding to the kitchen's cocktail bar vibe.

In the bedroom, wood wardrobes and a built-in desk allow the green-tiled window seat to stand out.

The kitchenette is compact but effective. The shelving unit had to be anchored to the ceiling; building codes required a bannister for the loft, so Ben rigged up a two-for-one design. The terracotta backsplash tile is from Clé and the brass fixtures are by Phylrich.

The custom cabinetry is made from white oak, with hardware from Matilda Goad & Co. The open shelving holds pieces with meaning. "A lot of the bowls, plates, trinkets, flatware, some of the lighting and art, were kept from the business our family owned when we sold it, so these pieces are really special," Ben explains.

The open living-and-bedroom area of Ian Hague’s rural retreat can be divided by a wall that rises from within the master-suite platform. Interior designer Elaine Santos blended her client’s collection of vintage furniture with no-fuss pieces like a Shaker-style bench by Ilse Crawford for De La Espada.

Connected to the main house by a narrow bridge, a three-story cedar tower with a sauna at its base recalls a tree house. The screened-in second level includes a table and chairs for enjoying an outdoor meal, while a swing on the tower’s top level provides a perch to take in the surrounding birch trees.

The home features floor-to-ceiling windows and doors from the Marvin Ultimate collection as well as a combination of smaller casements and awnings. “It breaks up those large openings and gives them more of a human scale when you’re opening and closing the windows,” explains architect Nate Dalesio. Facundo adds some logs to the standalone fireplace. The microcement niche below it is something he designed “on the fly” during the seven-month construction.

The bathroom adjacent to the studio space contains simple finishes and fixtures, including white shower tile and flooring from Daltile, and shower fixtures from Kohler.

“We pulled apart one volume and staggered it along the buildable area of the property,” says architect Matthew Ahlberg of Portland firm Barrett Made. The home is clad in unfinished cedar, meant to weather over time.

A tub remains in one bathroom, as a balance of accessibility and non-disabled wants.
