Sightlines throughout the house give glimpses to the exterior architecture. Here, a window in the primary bedroom looks out onto an original brick screen at the front of the house. Minimal décor and light-toned textiles bring a sense of serenity to the space.

Norman Millar and Judith Sheine designed the built-ins in the living-dining area, which were made from vertical-grain Douglas fir. Vintage Dutch industrial chairs are arranged around a black walnut dining table that, like the madrone coffee table, is by Urban Hardwoods.

In the bathroom, the shower stall looks up to the open sky.

The bespoke dining table was designed by architect Belinda George and crafted using totara timber gifted by the client’s brother. It was made by the same furniture maker who was commissioned by the client’s mother to make a dining table many decades ago.

The main cottage can be accessed from two points in the extension: the entry hall and the ground-floor bedroom. This ensures it remains connected but can operate independently depending on the needs of the residents at any given time.

Much of the furniture in the public spaces is vintage, sourced from local shops and collectors.

Adam and Karyn Bechtel tasked architect Emily Jagoda with renovating the 1960 home they share with their two daughters in the hills of Woodside, California. A curvilinear, built-in sofa with integrated storage sits below a lofted art studio and angular clerestory windows that frame views of the surrounding trees.

The first story opens to a large reception room with white-painted brick walls and hardwood beams and floors.

"I selected things that spoke to my heart," says Lexi. That included an alligator bench and a dining table passed down from her great-grandmother. "Sometimes you don’t know if things are going to work."

The master bedroom’s custom bed has built-in storage. The lighting is by Workstead.

The master bathroom has a floor-to-ceiling windowed corner that holds a Belle freestanding tub by Progetto and in-wall fixtures by Copper Bath.

The cooktop is by Wolf and the oven, hood, and dishwasher are by Bosch.

The cool blue dining chairs are actually vintage school chairs sourced by Tribe herself. The rounded pendant light hanging over the dining table is by Muuto and the sculptural wall lighting is Le Corbusier's Nemo.

The guesthouse has similar built-ins and is outfitted with a reproduction rotating sconce by Serge Mouille and rugs by Stephanie Odegard.
