“The idea was not to make a total break between the existing building and the new work, but to allow a sort of deliberate overlap,” explains Brian.

The new en suite bath features two-tone, gray-and-white tiles to match the two-tone paintwork in the original house and the two-tone plasterboard on the extension. Metal detailing wraps around the arched mirror above the timber vanity.

Space of Mind comprises an angular wooden shell, modular structural furniture elements, and a large picture window that frames views of the surroundings.

Rafael Marquina, Nani Marquina’s father and the rescuer of this Thonet chair, was an accomplished Catalan architect and designer who was best known for his nondrip oil cruet. The younger Marquina keeps the chair, still unrepaired, in her Barcelona studio.

Around back, an additional staircase connects to paths that wind through the property’s garden. Views from the hilltop lot include Sather Tower, a landmark on the UC Berkeley campus, as well as Mount Tamalpais in the distance.

The owner had to build a “materials elevator”—a 90-foot ramp with a buggy and a winch—to bring construction materials from the bottom of the cliff to the building site on the top. Today, it’s used to transport firewood up the steep site.

The pantry doors open to reveal an extra-high level of customization where every inch of storage space is thoughtfully accounted for. What looks like two pull-out drawers below the space are actually three drawers, as one door actually containing two drawers inside it.
