The couple added a coat of black paint and cedar siding to give the home a cleaner, more modern look. "The house already had wide and low eaves, providing protection from the sun, and we added new spray-foam insulation, so the black exterior actually does not pose too much of an issue with the desert heat," she says. A new Cor-Ten steel fence blocks the view of the neighbor's roof, but doesn't interfere with the landscape.

After: They removed the glass blocks and added direct access to the bathroom, creating a proper en suite primary bedroom.

After: The second bedroom is now a sunroom and TV lounge, and Michelle's favorite space in the home.

The backsplash and counters are marble, which will patina overtime. The couple found the handwoven rug while traveling in Morocco.

After: By knocking down a wall, they opened up the kitchen to the living room to create one great room, ideal for entertaining.

The Bend area also experiences dramatic daily temperature swings: a hot summer day can transition to below freezing at night. Cedar cladding provided the durability needed for such conditions.

“At night, you don’t see the building; you just see the glowing openings in the wheel,” adds Steely.

The courtyard was one of the few spaces that Mitch specified, having seen one in another of Steely’s projects. Otherwise, “I just talked about lifestyle, and Craig took that and built something based on it,” Mitch says. He plans to host get-togethers in the courtyard after the pandemic, but for now he primarily uses it for solo dance parties.

The front of the home shows how the roof was lifted to maximize the views.

The home lies low to the ground, much like the 1940s ranch house that formerly occupied the site.

The corner kitchenette includes marble countertops, a dishwasher, and miniature fridge. Small picture windows frame captivating views of the nearby lawn and pool.

The kitchen is outfitted with Henrybuilt cabinetry and Heath Ceramics tile on the backsplash. Modern matte black can lights by Cedar & Moss illuminate the bar.

Hay outdoor furniture sits underneath the steel pergola.

There’s a one-foot level change down to the primary bedroom, which is Shaker in spirit. Instead of closets, each bedroom has a set of deep, built-in drawers. “The architects kept us to our word that the house is meant for short-term stays,” the husband says. Lachapelle sourced the Ethnicraft bed and side table from Fiore Home in Portland, Maine, and the vintage velvet Ligne Roset chair from the Brimfield Antique Market.

Modern Windsor chairs by Hay surround an oak extension table by Ethnicraft. “You flip a lever and it gets larger,” Lachapelle says. The original plan called for a center island, but the owners wanted the flexibility of a table they could also use as a prep surface. The oak cabinet behind the sofa is on casters for additional utility. “We can even use it outside,” the husband says.

The wife notes that the pattern on the concrete reminds her of a floor she once saw in Nepal.

In the primary bath, which includes the home’s only indoor shower, Lachapelle used plumbing fixtures and hardware with an oil-rubbed bronze finish that relate to the touches of black in the living space. The wood dowel and leather triangle towel holders are from Schoolhouse.
